This weekend, your Rocks hosted the Carmel Greyhounds for Senior Night. The game began on Friday but, due to weather, was completed on Saturday evening with the Rocks coming from behind for a 17-13 victory. It was a literal tale of two nights, with Westfield coming out a bit flat to start Friday night. Carmel started with the ball and quickly put three points on the board on their first drive. Westfield’s offense attempted to answer, but sputtered to a stop and turned it over after four downs. The 3-0 Greyhound advantage would hold into the second quarter, with Carmel once more on the move. The Greyhounds finished the drive with an additional seven points, and the Rocks found themselves in a 0-10 hole. The Rock O couldn’t get anything going on its next drive, and it was Carmel with the ball and the lead in the second when lightning moved into the area. The game was paused, but with the weather continuing to be uncooperative, both teams elected to continue the game the following evening. On Saturday, Westfield came out with a greater sense of urgency on defense. Drew Law came up big with an interception to start things off, but the Rock O was unable to capitalize. After a Shamrock punt, Westfield stopped the Greyhounds again, but got the ball back with limited time remaining in the half. They were unable to put any points on the board, and the 10-0 Greyhound score would stand at the break. Westfield received the ball to start the second half, continuing its offensive reawakening with a solid drive that ended in an Owen Wright field goal. Carmel answered with a field goal of their own, and the deficit was back to 10. Carsen Melvin came alive then, finding Gabe Aramboles for a deep strike that brought the Rocks within three (Wright kick). The Shamrock score came as time expired in the third quarter with long drives having eaten up a lot of clock. Westfield would start the fourth with a kickoff to Carmel, down 10-13. Alex Aramboles notched his third sack of the night on Carmel’s next drive, helping secure a big stop for the defense. The Rock O stayed hot with Melvin finding Preston Pekala for a big gain, and then Mikeah Webster punched it in to give the Rocks their first lead of the night (Wright kick). With a little over nine minutes to play, Carmel looked to answer and retake the lead. They strung together an effective drive that was cut off when Deacon King intercepted a Greyhound pass in the end zone for a touchback. Westfield’s offense wasn’t able to milk much time from the clock, and Carmel got a second chance for an answer with around four-and-a-half minutes to play. Webster and Alex Aramboles led the Rock D in a big stand where Aramboles notched his fourth sack of the night, and the Rocks turned the Greyhounds over on downs. With a little over two minutes to play, Westfield’s offense needed a couple of first downs to put things on ice. Webster and the big Shamrock O-line pounded the Greyhounds, picking up enough to enable Melvin to kneel down to seal things. Westfield would complete the senior night comeback with a 17-13 victory. Your Rocks will return to action next Friday when they start conference play and the rivalry portion of the schedule by hosting the Zionsville Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
