On Friday, your Rocks traveled to Franklin Central to face the Flashes for their final regular season contest. Westfield secured second place in the conference and a 7-2 (6-1 HCC) overall record with a 42-7 victory. The Rocks started on D for this one and quickly forced a punt. Westfield’s offense put together a great drive all the way down the 6 yard line, but were unable to convert on a fourth and two and turned it back over. The teams then exchanged a pair of punts before Isaac Weingart came up big with a pick-six (Diego Herrera kick). Alex Aramboles tacked on a big sack when the Flashes tried to answer, and the first quarter ended with a 7-0 Shamrock league. FC punted it back to start the second, and Westfield went back to work around midfield. Aiden Grobowski broke free for a score to extend the lead to 14 (Herrera kick). The Flashes answered this one with a score of their own, trimming the lead back to 7. On the next Westfield possession, Baylor Conner broke free for a score to extend the lead again (Herrera kick). Wade Washo then forced a fumble on the subsequent kickoff and Ashton Johnson recovered it. The Shamrock offense capitalized on the extra possession with another Grabowski scamper for six (Herrera kick). Aramboles added another play to the highlight reel on the next FC drive when he stripped the ball away from the Flashes, taking it back for the Rocks. The offense was unable to convert this short field to points and punted it back. The Rock D stymied the Flashes again on offense, and Westfield took back over with around two-and-a-half minutes to play in the half. The Rocks moved the ball effectively down the field, and Grawboski was able to notch his third score of the night with another run (Herrera kick). With only seconds remaining, the Flashes opted to take a knee, and Westfield went into the break with a 35-7 lead. Franklin Central tried to get things going in the second half with an onside kick to start things off. They recovered it, but the Rock D held through four downs on the drive to take it back. The teams traded a pair of punts with one from Westfield’s Noah Lee pinning the Flashes back on the 1 yard line. Franklin Central was able to work its way out of the hole and get a punt away, and then Westfield would fumble the ball back on their next drive. FC looked to capitalize on the extra possession, moving quickly down the field, but the Rock D eventually stiffened and forced a field goal. The Flashes missed the try, and the score remained 35-7. A tipped pass from the Shamrocks was intercepted by Franklin Central on the next drive, but once again the Rock D was able to hold through four downs to stop any sort of threat from the Flashes. The Rocks took their 35-7 lead to the fourth along with possession of the football. Westfield put together a long drive that ate up a lot of the fourth quarter and ended with an Elliot Clevenger punch in (Nick Beam kick). This started a running clock that accelerated the remainder of the game. Sullivan Meehan was able to add a nice sack on fourth down to take the ball back for the Rocks, and then Westfield drained the clock. 42-7 Rocks was the final. Your Rocks will have a bye next week with the start of the IHSAA state tournament. All 6A teams have the week off, so Westfield will next be back in action when they host the Zionsville Eagles in the first round of the tournament on Halloween. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
