Freshman Football Defeats Greyhounds, 20-17

This past Saturday, your freshmen Rocks traveled back to Carmel for their own shot at the Greyhounds. The Rocks opened with a bang, with Quinn Hackman lining up at running back, taking a toss, and heaving it downfield for Jay Crumedy, who was able to win a contested catch and break away for a long touchdown to open the game. Carmel would respond immediately with a field goal drive and again in the second quarter by recovering a fumble for a defensive score. Trailing 10-7 in the second quarter, Hackman found Crumedy again, this time for a 43 yard strike down the left sideline for another Shamrocks touchdown, and more importantly the lead, which was preserved by a Henry Hahn interception to close the half. The second half proved to be just as exciting despite a scoreless third quarter. The tenacious defense opened up the game’s final stanza with a goal line stand to keep the lead at 14-10. However, after a Greyhounds interception put the ball at the 15 yard line, Carmel punched in a score with just over a minute remaining, taking a 17-14 lead. The Rocks needed a classic fourth quarter game-winning drive, however it did not start well. Facing a 4th & 24 from their own 38 yard line, the Rocks pulled a rabbit out of the hat, as Hackman found Rylan Reed all alone over the middle of the field for a 62 yard catch and run touchdown. Despite a missed extra point, the Rocks lead 20-17. A few plays later, Graham Miller secured the game-winning interception and your freshmen Rocks improved to 2-0 on the season. The young squad will look to make it 3-0 as they take on the Eagles of Zionsville in another road matchup next week.
