The Westfield boys track and field team had a very good performance at the Lafayette Jefferson Regional Thursday night. The team finished 4th (3 points out of 2nd), and advanced 5 individual athletes and all three relays while working around a very late injury issue that affected 2 of the relays. The sole regional champion for the Shamrocks came in the first event, when the 4x800 of Maxim Poirier, Caleb Haney, Carson Ackley, and Will Snedeker won the event. That came at the same time as the night's biggest surprise when Job Mavrick, already a state finalist this year in football and wrestling, punched his ticket to the state meet in discus by throwing an astounding 14 1/2 foot personal best on his first attempt of the night, hitting the state standard. The heroes of the night, however, were Kade Johnson and Ridge Wallerstedt. Caleb Terril, the school record holder in the 200, and a season-long mainstay in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, had to be replaced just before the meet began. Kade, in the 4x100, and Ridge, in the 4x400, were pressed into duty at the last minute, came up big and solidified the relays, both of which advanced to the state meet, finishing 2nd in both events. The runners on those two state qualifiers: in the 4x100--Maison McCray (also performing hurt), Johnson, Cayden Gearhart, and Cato June; the 4x400: Poirier, Haney, Wallerstedt, and Snedeker. Other athletes who advanced to state meet included Cato June who ran the standard in the 100, Logan Tuck who did the same in the 110 hurdles, Snedeker who got the call back in the 800, and Alex Wilson who will also get called back in the pole vault. Other althletes also had great nights but did not advance in this tough regional: Cayden Gearhart just missed the state standard by .02, Ty Conner ran the 2nd fastest time in school history in the 3200, while Luke Moulder now owns the 6th fastest 1600 time at WHS, and Lucas Bland is tied for 5th all-time in the pole vault. Ryd Wallerstedt also ran a fine time in the 400, winning the preliminary heat in that event. The IHSAA State Championship is next Friday, June 6, at North Central HS--a change from previous years when it was held in Bloomington. The meet begins with field events at 3 pm.
