The Westfield Shamrock boys track and field team won its first ever Sectional Championship Thursday night. It was by the slimmest of margins, with a lot of points coming from some surprising events, proving this to be a true team victory. There were 4 sectional champions for the Rocks in the meet. The 4x100 of Maison McCray, Caleb Terril, Cayden Gearheart, and Cato June continued their assault on the record books, breaking the sectional record with their victory. The 4x400 of Terril, Maxim Poirier, Caleb Haney, and Will Snedeker, also very formidable, also won their event, hitting the state standard on the way to victory. There were also two individual champions: Logan Tuck pulled the upset victory in the 110 hurdles with a huge PR, and Snedeker pulled away from a stacked field in the 800 for another huge win. Several athletes scored big points on their way to top 3 finishes, securing the automatic bid to the Regional. June in the 100, Robert Campbell in the high jump, and Alex Wilson and Lucas Bland in the pole vault all punched their ticket with top 3 finishes, as did the 4x800 relay of Poirier, Luke Moulder, Carson Ackley, and Haney, which finished 2nd. But with a one point team win, many other athletes also had to contribute significant points while also getting their call backs to the regional. McCray (6th in the 100), Gearhart and Terril (4th and 5th in the 200), Ryd Wallerstedt and Carson Faulconer (5th and 6th in the 400) Moulder (4th in the 1600), Haney (6th in the 800), Ty Conner (7th in the stacked 3200), Braeden Dewes (5th in the 300 hurdles), and Job Mavrick (4th in the discus) all continue on to the regional with great performances. The Regional is next Thursday, May 29 at Lafayette Jefferson HS.
