Rocks Fall to Bulldogs in State Championship

The true victories of high school football often aren’t reflected on a Friday night: the bonds forged, the adversity overcome, the foundation for a bright future built. In a world where mental health has risen to the forefront of challenges faced by teenagers, it is the intangible purpose and support provided by a close-knit football family that counts far more than wins or stats. We started this iteration of the Rocks in 2024 with the sort of top level change that could really shake things up. But if you caught Coach Miracle’s interview prior to the state final, he made a comment about the team really being owned by the players and, in particular, the seniors. Dr. John Maxwell's Law of Legacy states that a leader's lasting value is determined by succession. Maxwell suggests that the people a leader invests in will carry on their legacy, and that a life's significance is measured by its impact on others. While we, as a coaching staff, are very proud of the succession from Coach Gilbert’s Rocks to Coach Miracle’s Rocks, as you might see referenced in the media, we also know that the program has always been in the hands of the student athletes who compete each Friday under the lights. It is really their legacy that we’ve all been building: their succession, their impact on others. The legend of the Rocks can only ever be told by the leaders of the team, one season at at time. Each class that comes through has the opportunity to elevate the standard, and advance the narrative. The 2024 Rocks cemented their legacy long before they stepped onto the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium. They compiled a 12-2 record (6-1 HCC), capturing a share of the conference title and advancing all the way to the very last 6A game of the season. They served and represented their community well, taking us all on a ride that we won't soon forget. Champions aren’t made by the outcome of a game, but by the process, the work and the love they put in each week. These 2024 Rocks are very much the champions they set out to become. Our theme this year was Family 2.0, and it signified a recommitment to our core approach of outworking and out loving, as well as the bedrock principles of fun, victory with honor, making a difference, commitment to excellence and, of course, family. These lofty ideals, realized in a unique way by each iteration of the Rocks, have guided us to 5 state finals appearances since the word "family" first graced the backs of program T-shirts. We believe it has energized a positive community around a special group of young men and a fraternity of alumni that continue to make an impact on the world around them. We love being Rocks, and we strive to represent the community well both in victory and defeat. Special things happen when individuals come together for a larger purpose, and live out that purpose arm-in-arm, through thick and thin. It is a high standard, but one these 2024 Rocks rose up and met. Thanks to all of the fans who help to make the Friday night experience what it is in Westfield. Riverview Health Stadium continues to be a great place to be a Shamrock, and we do not take that for granted. Thanks to the parents who have poured countless hours into these fantastic young people and loaned them out to us. We hope you see the return on this investment both immediately and in the years to come. Most of all, we thank our seniors for fighting to keep us together for the true maximum number of weeks. There will always be 1 MORE of something to strive for as you continue to build toward your full potential. Keep fighting, keep reaching. We hope that, decades from now, you will reflect upon these four short years as among the most amazing experiences of your life. I hope you know that it is very genuine when we dry up the tears from a tough end to an incredible journey and say we are grateful and proud of the time you dedicated growing the legend of the Rocks.
