Last Friday, your Rocks traveled to Fishers to face the Tigers for the Regional Championship. Westfield was hunting for a second straight trip to the semi-state contest, while Fishers was coming off a big win over their cross-town rival. Westfield kicked to start things off, and the teams circled like a pair of prize fighters out of the gate. The Rocks landed the first blow when Carsen Melvin found Deacon King on a throwback for 28 yards and a score (Owen Wright kick). The Tigers would have the ball to end the first, dancing into Shamrock territory, down a score. They landed their counter early in the second, tying it up at 7. The Rocks punched right back when Cato June took the following kickoff to the house (Wright kick). The Rock D was able to stall things for the Tigers, and the Rocks got it back midway through the second quarter. Melvin ran this one in from short, extending the lead to 21-7 (Wright kick). The teams traded jabs with a pair of stalled drives before the end of the half, and the two score lead held for Westfield at the break. Westfield received the ball in the second half, but the Tigers came out ready and forced a punt. The third quarter saw a one-two punch from Fishers land, with two unanswered scores to pull even. It was 21-all headed to the fourth. The Rocks stayed calm and leaned on all the work they’d put in to bolster their confidence in the final round. Melvin found Beau Braun early in the quarter to take the lead back (Wright kick). The Rock D then held through four downs to dodge the counter. King punched through for a big fourth and one conversion for the Rocks on the next drive, and Melvin finished the drive off with a feint and strike for a second unanswered score (Wright kick). With time running down, Fishers countered again, not willing to go down without a fight, and then attempted an onside kick. The Rocks recovered and King landed the knockout with a 49-yard burst through the line for a score (Wright kick). Westfield’s defense held strong against the last Tiger try through four downs, taking it back to seal the fight. The Rocks were able to kneel it out with a 42-28 victory. Your Rocks will host the semi-state contest next week, a rematch with the Crown Point Bulldogs the main event. Kickoff is scheduled for 8PM.
