On Friday, your Rocks hosted the Zionsville Eagles for the first week of the rivalry portion of the schedule. With the Shining Star trophy having resided in Westfield for the last 12 seasons, this year’s Rocks were shooting for lucky number 13. The Rocks started on offense, and put together a long and effective first drive. Carsen Melvin got the scoring started when he punched it from short (Owen Wright kick). The Eagles stalled on their first drive, with the Rock D forcing a punt. Zionsville would snap it over the head of the punter, and the Rocks got it back with a short field. Mikeah Webster rumbled in on this drive for the score (Wright kick) and the Rocks were out to a quick 14-0 lead to end the first. Webster then added an interception for the defense on the next Eagle drive, but Westfield threw it back a few plays later. Zionsville then put together a long drive that ate up most of the second quarter, but the Rock D was able to deny the touchdown. The Eagles settled for a field goal, and the Rocks would go into halftime up 14-3. Westfield started the second half on defense, and Zionsville was able to build on what they started in the first half, finding the end zone this time and trimming the lead to 3. The Rocks would cough it up on their next drive, and momentum looked to be swinging firmly around to the Eagles. The Rock D stiffened, however, and held through four downs to take back possession. Melvin then found Preston Pekala on the next drive for a score (Wright kick). Drew Law came up big for the Rock D on the next possession, intercepting an errant pass. Westfield’s offense was unable to capitalize on the extra possession, though, and closed out the third quarter with a 21-10 lead. The Eagles had the ball to start the fourth, but Keegan Krupp was able to strip the ball from the quarterback and Ainsley Awali dove on it for the recovery. This set the offense up with another short field, and Melvin took full advantage this time, finding Broc Parker for the score (Wright kick). With the Eagles on the ropes, Isaac Weingart was able to force out another fumble for the Rocks that was recovered by Cato June. Westfield was able to get a few first downs, and then let the clock run out, securing the 28-10 victory. Your Rocks will return to action next Friday when they travel to Noblesville to face the Millers with the Midland Rail trophy on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
