Saturday, the Freshmen Rocks traveled back to Center Grove for their opportunity to get after the Trojans. The Trojans jumped out to a quick 15-0 lead early on. Encouraged by the comeback they had seen the previous night, the freshmen never waivered, and banded together. Devin Ross secured a timely interception to stop one first half drive, and a long TD pass from Cooper Melvin to Andrew Noble got the young Rocks on the board, with the score standing at 15-6 come halftime. The Rocks came out of halftime angry and ready to flip the script. Daniel Lanning forced a fumble on the opening kickoff of the half, and the offense quickly capitalized with another Melvin to Noble TD connection. The extra point narrowed the deficit to 15-13. On the ensuing Trojan possession, Sullivan Meehan picked up a fumbled snap and returned it 35 yards to give the Shamrocks the lead. Elliott Clevenger punched in the 2 point conversion, and the lead was 21-15. The Trojans insisted on making this a close game, scoring a TD to open the fourth quarter. However, the Rocks PAT Block unit came through, pressuring the kick and causing the point after to be no good. The score stood at 21 all. The two teams battled it out the rest of the fourth quarter, and after a critical defensive stop to force a late punt, the Shamrocks offense had one last possession, starting at their own half yard line with just 1:13 left. The offense put on a master-class performance, driving the entire length of the field, culminating in a Melvin TD run with 6.4 seconds remaining. On the ensuing kickoff, Max Vendergriff intercepted a lateral and took it to the house to put the cherry on top of an epic Week 1 victory. The final score read 34-21. The freshmen Rocks will look to make it two in a row next Saturday at home against Carmel.
