Last night, your Rocks hosted the Avon Orioles, earning a 35-21 victory in front of a huge group of youth league players. Westfield started off on D, coming up with an initial stop. The Shamrock offense then put together an efficient opening drive that saw Cole Ballard punch it in from short for the score (Brody Boehm kick). The Rock D came up big on the next possession, recovering a fumble and giving it back to the offense on the short end of the field. Unfortunately, the Rocks would miss the field goal, keeping the score at 7-0 Rocks to end the first quarter. Avon tied things up to start the second, and then the teams would trade punts before the next Shamrock highlight. Anthony Feltrinelli busted through on the second Avon punt, blocking it and setting up the Shamrock offense with another short field. A second missed field goal from the Rocks squandered some good scoring chances, but the Rock D held and the score stayed tied at 7 for halftime. The Rocks received the ball to start the third quarter, and came out of halftime with renewed focus. The offense marched downfield and Kendall Garnett strolled in untouched to cap the drive and regain the lead (Boehm kick). Mikeah Webster recovered an Avon fumble on the next drive, getting the ball back to the offense. For a third time, however, the offense attempted to settle for a field goal, and this time it was blocked. With only a one score lead, momentum looked to be turning, but Sam Toney stripped the ball from Avon on the next drive, sending it right back into the hands of the Shamrock offense. This time, the offense capitalized with Ballard punching it in for his second score of the night (Boehm kick). It looked like the Rocks would cruise into the fourth quarter with a two-score lead, but a penalty as the third quarter time expired led to a final play before the fourth. Avon converted a deep pass for a touchdown, trimming the lead back to one score to start the fourth. The Shamrock offense answered the score with one of their own, Garnett dancing in untouched for his second score of the night (Boehm kick). Toney would snag his second strip of the night, taking the ball back for the Rocks, who ended up having to punt it away. Avon trimmed the lead back to one with 4:23 to play, but the ensuing onside kick was smothered by the Rocks. Ballard then capped the next Shamrock drive with a long run for a score to extend things back to a two-touchdown advantage (Boehm kick). With Avon getting desperate to get a quick answer, Andrew Lieske came up with a game-sealing interception, and then Rocks were able to kneel things out. The final score was 35-21, Rocks. The Rocks will return to action next Friday when they travel to Fishers to face the Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
