Last night, your Rocks hosted the Zionsville Eagles, earning a 23-16 victory and retaining the Shining Star rivalry trophy for the 10th straight season. The Rocks received the kickoff to open the game, and the Shamrock offense stormed down the field with Kendall Garnett powering it in for the score. The Rock D then took the field and forced a quick punt. An ensuing fumble set the Eagles up with a short field, as the Rock D attempted to hold onto their 6-0 lead at the end of the first. The Eagles were made to settle for a field goal to start the second, trimming the margin. A short punt by Westfield put the Eagles back in business, but the Rock D was able to again hold them to only three points, knotting the game at 6. The Shamrocks went back to work on offense, ripping off some solid gains that culminated in Brody Boehm drilling a field goal to retake the lead. With time in the first half running down, both teams attempted to work the clock to sneak in a score before the break, but ultimately the 9-6 Shamrock advantage would hold at halftime. Zionsville got the ball to start the second half, but the Rock D forced a quick three-and-out. Cole Ballard then found Gabe Aramboles for a long gain, and then scampered in on his own for a Shamrock score (Boehm kick). The two teams traded punts before a long Eagle connection led to a score, trimming the lead back to three. It would be 16-13 headed into the fourth, the Eagles with the ball looking to take the lead for the first time. Once more, the Rock D limited the opposing offense to a field goal, tying the game at 16. Ballard found Max Nosler on the next possession, who broke several tackles to setup another Ballard punch into the end zone (Boehm kick). With almost eight minutes left the play, the Rock D needed to come up with a few big stops to seal this one. Coleton Vondersaar delivered a big sack on the next Eagle possession, forcing a punt and allowing the Shamrock offense to drive the clock all the way down to just under two minutes before they had to punt it back. Up a score, with the game clock winding down, the Rock D took the field for a last time, looking to stymie the explosive Eagle offense. Sam Toney intercepted a tipped pass from the Eagles, taking back possession and sealing the win for the Rocks. A few knees solidified the 23-16 final. The Rocks will return to action next Friday when they traveled to Noblesville to face the Millers to conclude the rivalry portion of the schedule with the Midland Rail trophy on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
