Last Friday, your Rocks hosted the Flashes from Franklin Central to round out both conference and regular season play. The game ended up being of little consequence as, across the conference, the standings were maintained without any notable upsets. Still, Westfield took care of business with a dominating 42-14 victory, securing sole possession of second place in the HCC and likely maintaining their #3 ranking in 6A. The Rocks started with the ball for this one, and Cooper Melvin led the offense efficiently downfield, eventually connecting with Caiden Snow from 18 yards to open up the scoring (Diego Herrera kick). Westfield’s defense forced a punt on the first possession from the Flashes, and the Shamrock offense went back to work. Melvin found Snow again, this time from 22 yards, to extend the lead (Herrera kick). FC went three-and-out on their second drive, and Westfield took back over. Andrew Noble busted the top off the defense, and Melvin hit him in stride for a 62 yard score (Herrera kick). The Rocks would take a 21-0 lead into the second quarter. FC looked to have a decent drive going to start the half, pushing deep into Shamrock territory, but Sullivan Meehan recovered a fumble to take possession back for the Rocks. Westfield’s offense kept right on scoring, with Elliot Clevenger rumbling in from four yards out to cash in (Herrera kick). With things beginning to get out of hand, the Flashes tried to push their next drive with a fourth down conversion, but the Rocks came up with a big sack to take the ball back. Westfield pushed back into the red zone, and Melvin lasered one in to Snow from 10 yards out for their third scoring connection of the night (Herrera kick). Franklin Central tried one last long field goal as time expired in the half, but it fell short and the Rocks went into the break with a 35-0 lead. The second half started with a running clock and the Rocks on defense. Westfield forced a quick three-and-out and the second offensive unit took over. Ben Kooi threaded the needle to a streaking Maddox Novotney for a 32 yard score midway through the third (Nicholas Beam kick). The Rock D forced another punt and held the 42-0 lead as things ticked over to the fourth quarter. The Flashes would break free on a pair of possessions for two scores, while John Bunch recovered a fumble for the Rocks. Westfield was eventually able to take a couple of knees and run out the time to secure the 42-14 victory. Your Rocks will have two weeks to prepare for the opening round of Sectionals, where they will face the Carmel Greyhounds. Carmel ended the season at 5-4 and will be looking to avenge a four point loss to Westfield in week 2. The game will be one of the marquee first round matchups with both teams ranked as top tier in 6A. Kickoff is scheduled on October 30th at 7pm.
