This past week, your freshmen Shamrocks football team played TWO games, hosting the Hamilton Southeastern Royals on Monday and then traveling to Brownsburg for a clash with the Bulldogs on Saturday. The undefeated Rocks got off to their usual fast start against the Royals, with Everrett Virgona scampering into the end zone to open the scoring. HSE would respond with a touchdown early in the second quarter, but the Rocks answered immediately on special teams with a blocked PAT. Then, Damarius Stone took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown the other way. Everett Virgona would add a second touchdown on a 42 yard catch and run and the Rocks would take a 20-6 lead into halftime. Things would tighten up in the second half. HSE scored a touchdown in the third, however the Rocks defense would hold on a two point conversion attempt to make the score 20-12 heading into the fourth quarter. Despite a valiant effort, the Shamrocks defense would surrender another touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The game would come down to another two point conversion attempt. Thankfully, the Rocks defense stiffened, getting yet another two point stop, and with the Shamrocks offense running out the clock, this rendition of the freshmen Shamrocks would improve to 5-0. On Saturday, the undefeated Rocks took on an undefeated freshmen squad in Brownsburg. The Shamrocks would open this clash of the titans with an Everett Virgona twenty five yard touchdown run. With a 7-0 lead, the special teams made their mark, recovering a muffed kickoff to immediately give the ball back to the offense. The offense made it count, with a steady march that culminated in a Luke Drow touchdown plunge from the one yard line. In a quick fashion, the Shamrocks had jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Brownsburg, however, would respond with an exceptionally long touchdown drive of their own, making it 13-7 come halftime. The second half opened with a pair of defensive stops each way. Then, with Brownsburg driving and threatening to take their first lead of the day, Luke Virgona intercepted an errant throw and took it all the way back for a touchdown and a 21-7 Shamrocks lead following the subsequent Luke Drow two point conversion. On the very next play, the Shamrocks special teams unit forced and recovered a fumble on the kickoff, putting the offense right back in business in Bulldog territory. Everett Virgona would then run in for his second touchdown of the day, and Westfield led Brownsburg 28-7. A quick Brownsburg touchdown in the fourth would make it a game again, but the Shamrocks defense would slam the door shut, with the offense running out the clock to send Westfield to 6-0 on the year, placing them in the driver’s seat for the conference championship. With their eyes set on an unbeaten season, the freshmen Shamrocks set their sights on next Saturday’s home match against the Avon Orioles.
