Last night, your Rocks traveled to Brownsburg to face the Bulldogs. It was a marquee matchup, with the top two teams in the state facing off, putting their undefeated records on the line, and garnering national attention. Unfortunately, the Rocks were unable to earn a victory in front of the packed house, falling 14-38. Westfield started with the ball and drew first blood. Baylor Conner punctuated a strong opening drive by punching it in from short and Diego Herrera’s kick gave the Rocks a 7-0 lead. Brownsburg answered with their own scoring drive to tie things up near the end of the first quarter. The second quarter started with Westfield looking to regain the lead, and Cooper Melvin scampered in to finish off another strong Shamrock drive. Herrera’s kick put the Rocks up again 14-7. Brownsburg again answered with a score, knotting it back up with eight minutes to play in the half. Westfield tried to keep momentum, but went three-and-out for the first punt of the night. Brownsburg kept moving the chains and looked poised to take the lead when Wade Washo forced a fumble for the Rocks. Westfield recovered deep in their own territory with under two minutes to play in the half. They were able to move the chains a couple of times, but stalled out and punted with 37 seconds left. Brownsburg, knowing they would get the ball to start the second half, got aggressive, trying to move quick and put up points before time expired. After a few chunk plays, the Rocks came up with a big sack to run the clock down and end the threat. The teams went into the break tied at 14. Everything went wrong for the Rocks in the second half. Brownsburg came out and scored on the opening drive to take the lead. Westfield’s offense was able to answer the score, punting it away for the second time. The Rock D held the Bulldogs to a field goal on the next drive, but with the lead extended to 10, things looked to be swinging fully in Brownsburg’s favor. An unfortunate fumble early in Westfield’s answering drive gave the potent Bulldog offense a short field as the third quarter expired. With a 24-14 lead, Brownsburg capitalized on the Shamrock turnover with a touchdown to move things to 31-14 early in the fourth. Westfield pushed aggressively on their following drive in a now-or-never effort to claw back into the game. They were unsuccessful converting a fourth down, and produced another short field for Brownsburg. The Bulldogs cashed in once more, effectively icing the game at 38-14 with around nine minutes to play. Westfield’s offense punted a couple more times as they kept trying to get something going. The Rock D held through four downs a pair of times to prevent further Brownsburg scores, but time quickly dwindled and the 38-14 Bulldog lead would hold to a final. Next week, your Rocks will look to get back on track when they host the Avon Orioles. Avon is sitting at 5-1 (3-1 HCC) coming off a 10 point victory over winless Fishers. Their only loss on the year is to Brownsburg, and they’ll be looking to keep it that way. Westfield will need to circle the wagons and fend off a hungry team to separate itself from the middle of the HCC pack. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
