This week, your freshmen Rocks football team traveled to Ft. Wayne to take on the Homestead Spartans in their first career high school football game! The first quarter was a defensive battle, with both defenses pitching a shutout through one. The Rocks defense was dominant all afternoon, led by Andrew Mendez, Blake Richardson, Charlie Weaver, and Michael Haney. Early in the second, Everett Virgona ripped off a 64 yard touchdown run to put the Shamrocks ahead 7-0. Following another quick defensive stop, Westfield’s offense was exploding downfield once again, this time with a 62 yard catch and run touchdown from Damarius Stone. A defensive stop on fourth down put the offense right back on the field in positive territory, leading to a 30 yard touchdown run by Camden Grabowski. The Rocks now held a dominant 21-0 lead over the Spartans. Homestead would knock through a field goal going into halftime to trim the lead to 18. A Charlie Weaver interception ended Homestead’s first drive of the second half, and once again gave the offense excellent starting field position. The offense quickly took advantage. A Kobe Byron-Dalton highlight reel catch set the offense up inside the ten, with Luke Drow throwing a quick touchdown pass to Blake Richardson two plays later to finish the drive off. The Spartans would put together a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, but a blocked extra point by Luc Kaufman would keep them in the single digits, with the final score reading 28-9 Westfield. Next Saturday, your freshmen Shamrocks will play host to the Carmel Greyhounds.
