Last night, your Rocks traveled to Merrillville High School to face the Pirates. They earned a 41-23 victory, punching their ticket to the State Final.
Westfield kicked off to start this one, and the Pirates started aggressively. They converted a fake punt on their first 4th down, but the Rock d was still able to get the stop. The Shamrock offense stalled on their first drive, and the Pirates got the ball back. They hooked up on a deep pass to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Rocks answered, though, on their next drive, when Maximus Webster found Reid Schepers while getting hit (Sullivan PAT). The Rock D then held through four downs on the Pirates next drive, forcing the TOD. It was knotted at 7 to end the first.
The Shamrock offense started the quarter with a 2nd and 20, but were able to pick it up and push down to the 14 yard line before Webster punched it in (Sullivan PAT). The Rock D came up with a big 3rd down sack on the next Pirate drive, forcing a punt. It was the Merrillville defense that came up with a TOD as they held through four downs on next drive. Alex Wolf came up big during Westfield’s next defensive stand, picking the ball off and returning it deep into Westfield territory. Webster then found Jackson Wasserstrom on a pretty move for the touchdown (PAT blocked). With 3:09 left in the half, the Pirates took back over an engineered a solid drive that resulted in a score just before the half (PAT missed). Westfield took a knee with 30s to play in the half and went in with a 20-13 halftime advantage.
The Rocks received the ball to start the second half, but went 3-and-out. The Pirates were able to put together another drive, but the Rock D held them to a field goal on this one. Still, it brought Merrillville to within 4 points midway through the 3rd quarter. On the next Shamrock drive, though, Micah Hauser came in and pancaked a linebacker on the edge, springing Webster for a long TD run (Sullivan PAT). The Pirates then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Westfield recovered to find itself set back up for another score. Webster punched that one in (Sullivan PAT), breaking the game open. Dillon Thieneman would come up big on the next defensive possession, intercepting the ball and setting the offense back up at the Westfield 20. A crazy sequence would follow where Webster picked up his own fumble, made it almost to the end zone, but then fumbled the ball back and the Pirates recovered this time. The Rock D slammed the door, however, forcing a 3-and-out and taking back over on their side of the field. The Shamrock offense converted on a big 4th and 3, setting themselves up at 9 yard line to end the third quarter with a 34-16 lead.
The start of the fourth saw Micah Hauser punching this one in (Sullivan PAT), extending the lead to 41-16. The Rock D came up with a hold on the next drive, and then the Shamrock offense was able to salt away some clock. The Pirates did get it back late and were able to put together one final drive, but with only 2:19 left, the game was well in hand. The Rocks picked up a first down and then were able to kneel it out, securing the 41-23 victory.
