The boys track team had a successful night Thursday advancing two relays and both hurdlers to the state meet.
The meet opened well with the 4×800 relay of Mahamat Djour, Max Gutwein, Noah Douthit, and David Mannella finishing in 3rd with a season best time of 7:58.63 for the automatic state meet qualification.
Next up were the sprinters, and Alex Kukura in the 100, Francis Agbo in the 200, and Cooper Boehm in the 100 hurdles all qualified for finals, the first time that all three prelim runners have advanced in school history. While they all scored, only Boehm would qualify for state, finishing 4th and grabbing the call back.
Then the 4×100 of Agbo, Kukura, Mason Piening, and Mario Chalmers broke their own school record to finish 3rd and gain one of that event’s call backs to state.
Then Calvin Grenda went to work in the 300 hurdles, running a season best time, also finishing 4th also getting the call back.
Also scoring was the 4×400 relay of Kukura, Djour, Grenda, and Mannella who finished 8th despite some unintentional interference from one of the officials.
In field events, Jacob Netral and Colin Caldwell threw both shot and disc, and while Caldwell did make finals, neither of them were able to advance to state.
The team ended up with a fine 9th place finish in the 37 team meet.
The boys state meet is next Friday, May 31 at IU in Bloomington.
