The Westfield boys track and field team had its best finish in memory gaining a 3rd place in the IHSAA Carmel Sectional Thursday night. The Shamrocks fielded two individual sectional champions on their way to scoring 97 points, just 4 behind 2nd place. Westfield also advanced all three relays to the regional next week at Lafayette Jefferson High School.
One of the event champions was a surprise, the other was not, as Justin Mamaril pulled the upset in the 300 hurdles, while Aaron Bennett ran the state standard, running away from the field at the finish in the 800 meter run. Other athletes earning a top 3 finish and an automatic bid to the Regional were Evan Manley in the 200, Charles Miller in the 400, Peyton Haack and Dainon Wray in the 110 hurdles, and Wray in the 300 hurdles. The 4×100 relay (Manley, Chris Zolto, Dorian Henson, Nolan Rodgers), the 4×400 relay (Haack, Wray, Mamaril, Bennett), and the 4×800 relay (Miller, Desmond Herrell, Nick Leahy, Bennett) all also got automatic bids.
Due to bad weather around the state, several athletes with a chance at call backs will have to wait until postponed sectionals are run on Friday, but those with a shot include Rodgers (100), Leahy (800), Haack and Mamaril (PV), and Colin Caldwell in the shot put.
