Due to storms on Thursday, the Rocks traveled to Hamilton Southeastern Friday to play a double header to open the three game HCC series with the sixth ranked Royals. Matthew Robinson started in game one for the Rocks and gave them a quality start, pitching 5 innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out two. Evan Tomak pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one. Offensively, the Rocks were never able to get much going and eventually lost game one 6-0. Sam Eaton, Zach Collins and Jason Gabennesch each collected a hit for the Rocks.
In game two, the Rocks sent senior Brian Skelton to the mound and he pitched a gem, allowing only one run on three hits over six innings of work and striking out seven. The game was knotted at 1-1 until the top of the sixth, when Evan Tomak delivered a clutch single to put the Rocks up for good. Logan McClurg took the mound in the 7th and induced a double play after allowing a hit and then struck out the final batter of the inning to earn his first save on the season in the Rocks 4-1 win over #6 HSE.
Game three took place on Saturday at Shamrock Field. Matthew Meyer was given the start for the Rocks and he did not disappoint, turning in a near perfect outing on the mound. Meyer pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and striking out six on the day to earn his second win on the season. HSE threatened in the first, after Meyer issued two walks and a hit, but he pitched himself out of the jam and was dominant the rest of the way as the Rocks won 2-0 over the 6th ranked Royals. Offensively, the Rocks used timely hitting to score the only two runs they needed with Meyer’s performance. Sam Eaton was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI while Meyer and Tomak each contributed a hit on the day. The win gave the Rocks their first HCC series win this season and is a boost for the young club. They will now travel to Brownsburg on Thursday to open up a HCC series with the Bulldogs at 6pm.
